The dress and the ladder - La robe et l'échelle - Francis Cabrel

The dress and the ladder – La robe et l’échelle

You put on your light dress

Me, the ladder against a cherry tree

You wanted to climb first

And after …

There’s so many ways,and manners,

To say things without speaking

And as you knew well to do it

You did it …

A smile, a helping hand,

And by the game of transparences

These fruits in the folds of fabric

Which are Swinging …

the point was not to climb very high

But the feet on the first bars

I felt the childhood coat sliding

Nothing was carved in marble stone

But I  often confess to  think about it

Each time I hear that a tree

has fallen …

A tree it’s quickly split

The wood, someone certainly sold it

If he knew the trouble I had

To climb down …

Besides, didI climb down

From all these games of transparences

These fruits in the folds of fabric

Which are Swinging …

I found others things to do

And others smiles to cross

But such a beautiful light

Never …

At the speed where time passes

The miracle is that nothing clears the essential

Everything flies away in light shadow

Everything but this taste of fever and honey

Everything has flown in space

The smile, the dress, the tree, and the ladder

At the speed where time passes

Nothing, nothing clears the essential

I found others things to do

And others smiles to cross

But such a beautiful light

Never …

And now, from the ground where we stand,

We spend our mortal lives

Searching these doors leading to heaven
